Purpose of Establishment
Chairman of the Asia Institute of Urban Environment (Non Profit Organization)
A lot of new industrial cities have been constructed in accordance with the rapid economic growth of Japan in the second half of the 20th century. And the construction of new towns and reconstruction in many cities had been implemented as labor-intensive measures. As a result, they brought heavy urban pollutions, such as noise, vibration, land subsidence and air/water pollution etc.
Through the design of national projects, Tokyo Olympic, Osaka EXPO and Tsukuba Science EXPO etc., I deeply felt the importance and necessity of urban environmental engineering for rapid expanding and growing cities.
And I established the first "Urban Environmental Engineering" course in Japan, inside the Department of Architecture of Waseda University in 1970. And this course produced over 700 bachelors, over 200 masters and over 50 PhDs. Besides the number of Asian countries' students has exceeded 40. Over 50 professors and assistant professors, who graduated the course are working in this field.
Asian countries' impact for global environment will be the largest in the future. Without a steady progress and cooperation in Asian countries environmental issues, it will be impossible to preserve the global environment.
I believe that it is an urgent need to establish an international institution to connect the researchers in Asian countries, provide opportunities for information exchange and cooperation. And through these opportunities, further development of the research on Asian cities' environment will be realized.
The background to establish the Asia Institute of Urban Environment at the beginning of 21st century is to answer the above mentioned need. This institution starts it's activities by the collaboration of the graduates from the Ojima Laboratory, above mentioned Urban Environmental Engineering course.
Each city has its own life, culture and civilization. I establish this institution hoping that each city will have vitality and realize healthy development, referring the institution member's study result and publication on the diversity of each city.
