Since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 following the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995, Japanese archipelago seems to have entered into the "active seismic period". With the revision of the Basic Energy Plan and the review of the Disaster Countermeasures Basic Act, Japan's sustainable development has become impossible without reform of our values and lifestyle.
Under such circumstances, attention has been paid to the Jomon society which had built sustanable community for thousands of years. Many ruins of the Jomon are on the geographically firm ground or hills free from tsunami disaster. Also looking at socially, a small settlement (it is estimated that there were a few thousands of them, as many municipalities as before the Great Mergers of recent years) is known to have formed self-sustaining culture of its own while building strong social network with other communities through trading and marital relationship.
Besides concentration of Jomon ruins, Lake Suwa surroundings are also unique in an accumulation of leading high-tech and high value-added companies with a focus on precision machinery as well as in their own energy strategy for utilizing abundant natural resources such as hydropower, biomass and solar energy.
In the era of great change of society and human value, future state of this area will be a matter of utmost importance as a representation of ideal Asian cities seeking safe and secure lifestyle and town development.
The Executive Committee of the Symposium has therefore decided its main theme as "Self-sustaining & Distributed Network Society - Foothills of Yatsugatake Mountains as a secure home of ancient Jomon village". We will expect to deepen discussions with foreign researchers on the scheme of preservation of urban environment and landscape as well as on the environmental culture in order to realize self-sustaining and distributed network society in sustainable cities where we can continue to live with safety and security.
